Yellowed, foggy headlights aren't just an eyesore — they're a genuine safety hazard. Cloudy headlights can reduce your light output by up to 80%, dramatically cutting your visibility at night and in poor weather. In Queensland, where UV exposure is intense, headlight oxidation is particularly common and tends to happen faster than in southern states.
The good news: restoration is achievable and you don't always need to replace the lenses.
Why Headlights Go Cloudy
Modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic, not glass. Polycarbonate is lightweight and impact-resistant, but it's highly susceptible to UV damage. Manufacturers apply a thin UV-protective coating to the surface, but this coating breaks down after a few years of Queensland sun.
Once the coating degrades, the UV radiation attacks the polycarbonate itself, causing oxidation — a yellowish, hazy layer on the surface of the lens. Road grime, tree sap, and chemical contaminants accelerate the process.
The cloudiness is on the outside surface of the lens, which is why it can be polished away.
DIY Restoration Methods
Method 1: Headlight Restoration Kit
Purpose-built kits (available from SuperCheap, Repco, or online) typically include wet/dry sandpaper in several grits, a polishing compound, and a UV sealant. The process:
- Mask the surrounding paint thoroughly with painter's tape
- Wet sand the lens — start with coarser grit (typically 800–1000) and work progressively finer (1500, 2000, 3000)
- Polish with the compound using a drill attachment or by hand
- Apply UV sealant — this is the critical step most people skip, but without it the cloudiness returns within months
Done properly, a restoration kit can achieve excellent results. The sanding step requires patience and even pressure — rushing leads to uneven results.
Method 2: Toothpaste Polish (Light Oxidation Only)
For mildly hazy lenses, white toothpaste (not gel) works as a light abrasive polish. Apply with a damp cloth, rub in circular motions, then rinse. Results are modest and temporary — the UV coating is gone, so oxidation returns quickly. Better than nothing, but not a long-term fix.
Method 3: Baking Soda and Vinegar
Mix baking soda with a small amount of white vinegar to form a paste. Apply and buff with a cloth. This is even more gentle than toothpaste and only works on surface grime, not true oxidation.
What Professional Restoration Looks Like
A professional headlight restoration goes further than DIY. Professional-grade compounds remove deeper oxidation that sandpaper alone can't address, and a UV-cured sealant (applied with a spray gun and cured under UV light) lasts significantly longer than the brush-on sealants in home kits.
Professional restoration restores clarity to 95%+ of original on most headlights and typically lasts 3–5 years with proper care.
When Replacement Is the Only Option
If the oxidation has penetrated through the full thickness of the polycarbonate (common on very old or severely neglected lenses), or if the lens has physical cracks or chips, polishing won't help. Replacement is necessary.
Check replacement lens prices before assuming it's expensive — many aftermarket lenses are affordable, and it may be worth comparing restoration cost vs replacement cost.
After Restoration: Keeping Them Clear
Once restored, UV protection is the priority:
- Park in shade or in a garage whenever possible
- Apply a quality car wax or ceramic coating to the lenses — these add UV protection
- Clean regularly — road grime and insect deposits accelerate degradation
- Reapply UV sealant every 12–18 months
The Road Safety Angle
Don't underestimate the safety issue. In Queensland, if your headlights are significantly degraded, you may fail a vehicle roadworthy inspection. Keeping headlights clear isn't just cosmetic — it's a compliance issue for any vehicle that needs to stay roadworthy.
For commercial fleets, maintaining clear headlights across all vehicles is part of your compliance and duty-of-care obligations for driver safety.
